Navigating Youth with Heart: Meet Summer Perry, MS, EDS

Hello, and a very warm welcome to you. If you are reading this, it’s likely because you are looking for support: either for yourself or for a young person in your life. Taking the first step to explore counseling is a brave act of self-care and love. I’m Summer Perry, and I am honored to be a part of the team here at Talk to Heal Counseling Center.

In my practice, I don't just see symptoms or "problem behaviors." I see a whole human being with a unique history, a vibrant future, and a story that is still being written. As an Associate Therapist with an MS and an EdS (Education Specialist degree), my background is deeply rooted in understanding the developmental, educational, and emotional landscapes that young people navigate every day. My goal is to create a space where you feel seen, heard, and: most importantly: safe.

A Heart for the Youth of Georgia

Growing up and coming of age in Georgia presents a unique set of experiences. From the bustling energy of our metropolitan areas to the close-knit feel of our smaller communities, the youth of our state are navigating a world that is moving faster than ever before. Whether it’s the pressure of academic achievement, the complexities of social media, or the weight of local and global events, I have seen firsthand how much our young people are carrying.

I have dedicated my career to working with youth in GA because I believe this is a pivotal time for growth and identity formation. My experience spans across various settings, allowing me to understand the specific stressors that Georgia students and young adults face. I know that "one size fits all" therapy doesn't work. Instead, I tailor my approach to the specific cultural and social context of the person sitting across from me. Whether you are in the heart of the city or in a quiet suburb, I am here to meet you where you are.

The Power of Your Story: Narrative Therapy

One of the cornerstones of my practice is Narrative Therapy. You might wonder, "What does that actually mean for me?" In short, Narrative Therapy views individuals as the experts of their own lives. It suggests that we all have "stories" about ourselves: stories of being "the smart one," "the anxious one," or "the person who always fails."

In our sessions, I work with you to externalize these problems. We shift the perspective from "I am the problem" to "the problem is a separate thing I am dealing with." By doing this, we create space to explore your strengths, your values, and the times you’ve shown resilience that your "old story" might have overlooked. Together, we "re-author" your narrative. We look for the chapters where you were the hero, even if you didn't realize it at the time. This approach is empowering because it gives you the pen back. You get to decide what happens in the next chapter of your life.

Seeing the Whole You: Intersectionality in Therapy

We do not live our lives in a vacuum. Every person is a beautiful intersection of various identities: race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, and culture. I am deeply committed to an intersectional approach to therapy. This means I recognize that your experiences of the world are shaped by these overlapping identities and the systems of power that surround them.

For many young people, navigating identity is the central challenge of their youth. I provide a specialized focus on intersectionality because I want to ensure that every part of you is welcome in our room. We will talk about how your environment affects your mental health. We will acknowledge the systemic barriers you might face and celebrate the cultural richness that makes you who you are. This isn't just about "feeling better"; it’s about understanding yourself in the context of the world and finding your place of power within it.

Creating a Safe, Trauma-Informed Sanctuary

Healing cannot happen without safety. That is why I prioritize a trauma-informed approach in everything I do. Trauma isn't just about major catastrophic events; it can be the "small" things that accumulate over time, making us feel on edge or disconnected.

When you work with me, I focus on:

  • Safety: Physical and emotional safety is our first priority.

  • Trustworthiness: I am transparent and consistent, so you always know what to expect.

  • Choice: You are in control of the pace and the topics we discuss.

  • Collaboration: We are a team. I am here to walk beside you, not lead you.

  • Empowerment: I focus on your existing strengths to help you build a toolkit for the future.

I want our sessions to feel like a sanctuary: a place where you can drop the mask and just be. Whether we are using traditional talk therapy, exploring creative expression, or using mindfulness techniques, the foundation is always a respectful and supportive relationship. Bridging the Gap: Education and Mental Health

With my EdS degree, I have a specialized understanding of how the educational system impacts mental health. For many youth, school is the primary source of stress, but it is also a primary community. I help students and their families navigate the complexities of school-based anxiety, learning differences, and the social dynamics that can make the school day feel like a battlefield.

I understand the terminology, the IEP/504 processes, and the academic pressures that are unique to the Georgia school systems. By bridging the gap between clinical mental health and educational support, I can provide a more holistic level of care that supports your success both inside and outside the classroom.
