From Interpretation to Healing: Meet Eun Sook Lee

For a long time, my life was defined by words. Specifically, the weight of words that needed to be carried from one language to another. Before I became a therapist here at Talk to Heal Counseling Center, I spent years working as an interpreter. In those rooms: sometimes in hospitals, sometimes in courtrooms, sometimes in community centers: I sat between two people who were trying to reach each other but couldn't quite find the way.
I wasn't just translating sentences; I was translating lives. I was the bridge between a grandmother trying to explain her grief to a doctor who only saw symptoms, and the bridge between a young man trying to explain his identity to a family that only saw tradition.
But I quickly realized that even with the most accurate translation, something was missing. There was a silence between the words that I couldn't bridge just by speaking. That silence was where the trauma lived. It was where the loneliness, the anxiety, and the unspoken hopes of the Korean-American community were hiding.
I realized then that I didn't just want to interpret the pain: I wanted to help heal it.
The Bridge Between Two Worlds
Growing up and working within the Korean-American community, I’ve seen firsthand the unique pressures we face. There is often a profound sense of being "in-between." We navigate the high expectations of our heritage while trying to find our footing in a modern, Western world.
During my time as an interpreter, I saw how many people suffered in silence because they felt no one truly understood the nuance of their experience. In the Korean language, there are concepts like Han (a deep, collective sorrow) or Hwa-byung (a physical illness rooted in suppressed anger) that don't always have a direct English equivalent.
When I decided to transition into social work, it was because I wanted to create a safe space where those feelings didn't need to be "translated" into something else to be valid. I wanted to offer a place where your cultural identity is not a barrier to your mental health, but a vital part of your healing journey.

My Journey to Social Work
My transition from interpretation to social work wasn't just a career change; it was a calling. I pursued my clinical training with a singular focus: to provide the Korean-American community with the professional, trauma-informed care they deserve.
I saw that while our community is incredibly resilient, that same resilience often prevents us from seeking help. We are taught to endure, to work harder, and to keep our struggles within the family. But "toughing it out" often leads to burnout, strained relationships, and a feeling of being fundamentally alone.
As a social worker and therapist, I’ve shifted my focus from being a mouthpiece for others to being a guide for the self. I’ve spent years honing my skills to ensure that when you sit across from me, you aren't just meeting a clinician: you’re meeting someone who understands the cultural script you’ve been given and is ready to help you write a new one.

A Trauma-Informed and Strengths-Based Approach
In my practice at Talk to Heal Counseling Center, I prioritize your safety and your sense of belonging above all else. I know that walking into a therapy room: or logging into a virtual session: can be intimidating. My goal is to make that experience as welcoming and respectful as possible.
I utilize a strengths-based approach. This means I don't just look at what is "wrong" or what "needs fixing." Instead, I look at the incredible survival skills and internal resources you already possess. You have made it this far, and that is a testament to your strength. Together, we will identify those tools and use them to navigate your current challenges.
I am also deeply committed to trauma-informed care. Whether you are dealing with generational trauma, the stress of immigration, or personal experiences that have left you feeling stuck, I provide a space where you can process those events at your own pace. I don't push; I walk beside you.

Why Cultural Competence Matters
When you search for a therapist, you want someone who "gets it." You shouldn't have to spend your entire session explaining your culture before you can even get to your feelings.
My commitment to the Korean-American community means that I understand the specific dynamics of our families: the deep love, the heavy expectations, and the complexity of the "model minority" myth. I understand the pressure to succeed and the guilt that often follows when we feel we’ve fallen short.
By providing therapy that is culturally sensitive, I help my clients navigate:
Intergenerational Conflict: Bridging the gap between immigrant parents and their American-born children.
Identity Exploration: Understanding who you are outside of the roles you play for others.
Anxiety and Depression: Addressing the root causes of distress in a way that respects your cultural context.
Relational Health: Building stronger, more authentic connections with the people you love.
We offer a variety of services tailored to these needs, which you can explore on our about page.
Healing in the Modern World
We live in a fast-paced world, especially here in Georgia. Between the hustle of career growth and the demands of family life, it’s easy to lose sight of our own well-being. I believe that therapy shouldn't be another chore on your to-do list; it should be a sanctuary.
Whether we meet in person or via online sessions, my focus is on creating a modern, accessible therapeutic experience. I use active, supportive methods to ensure you feel empowered from the very first session. We will work collaboratively. I am not here to tell you how to live your life; I am here to help you clear the fog so you can see the path you want to take.

Let’s Start the Conversation
If you’ve been feeling like you’re constantly "interpreting" yourself for the world: trying to fit in, trying to be what everyone else expects: it’s time to find a space where you can just be.
I am here to listen, to support, and to help you navigate the complexities of your life with compassion and clinical expertise. You don’t have to do this alone, and you don't have to wait until things are "bad enough" to seek support. You deserve to heal now.
